THIN PLACES Solo Exhibition at Ojiri Projects

One might assume that thin places, or locations where heaven and earth meet, are always full of beauty and wonder. But beyond breathtaking sunsets and sacred spaces, there may be other times and spaces in which heaven touches earth: moments when we ourselves feel thin, stretched too far. Moments when we lose control, or realize that we were never in control at all. Moments when we see clearly for the first time.

In Thin Places, Giorgiko presents an all-new body of work that explores the artists’ prayerful contemplations of how thin places find us when we are at our most vulnerable. Seven oil paintings and 12 ink drawings depict Giorgiko’s childlike characters suspended in various states of uncertainty. They are troubled, insecure, or frail, yet remain open to wonder. The artists encourage viewers to consider for themselves whether moments of hardship can be a thin place in which frailty can be full of beauty and wonder after all.

THE SEED OF PEACE Solo Exhibition at WOAW Gallery

THE SEED OF PEACE Solo Exhibition at WOAW Gallery

Is peace born of conflict, or found in the absence of inner and outer turmoil?  Humanity has sought control over themselves, others, and their environments in its pursuit of peace.  But if this search for control has not brought us closer to peace itself, perhaps peace can’t be forcefully taken or manufactured.  Perhaps it needs to be planted gently.

In this new body of work, Giorgiko presents 25 new oil paintings and ink drawings featuring the artists’ exploration of the search for peace in its different forms and the costs of obtaining it.  “The Seed of Peace” follows the journeys of childlike characters through scorched lands, tumultuous storms, and wild dogs in search of shelter.  A divine seed that grows into a pure white olive tree stands in gentle contrast to the chaos of the environment, offering the children the peace that they seek.  The artist duo draws inspiration from the sacred story of Christ’s self-sacrificing death and resurrection to bring peace to many - a story paralleling the death and rebirth of a seed, which grows into a new plant and offers shade to all who would rest under it.  The artists invite viewers to join them and their characters as they contemplate their own sources of peace in its temporal and lasting forms.

DARK MATTER Solo Exhibition

DARK MATTER Solo Exhibition

We’re excited to announce our debut museum show!

DARK MATTER explores the invisible forces behind the decisions we make and the narratives we create. The dark matter hypothesis proposes that 85% of all matter in the universe is unseen.  Astronomers have observed that galaxies seemingly do not have enough mass to account for the gravitational forces needed to hold them together in clusters.  However, there is evidence of a nearly undetectable, or “dark”, matter that generates binding forces in the universe while remaining a complete mystery.

In their new body of work, the artist duo Giorgiko play with the idea that a significant percentage of our lives may be made of a different “dark matter” — one of untold stories, hidden agendas, and powerful feelings — which plays an equally significant force on our lives and our relationships with others.  With so much unknown, what is perceived with the senses may only reveal a part of the story.  Through seven oil paintings and 13 special edition sculptures, Giorgiko invites viewers to consider what we really know, what we don’t, and the mystery that holds us all together when, theoretically, we should be flying apart.

VANGUARDS OF THE UNIVERSE Duo Exhibition
Jul

to Aug 7

VANGUARDS OF THE UNIVERSE Duo Exhibition

Vanguards of the Cosmos is about venturing into unknown spaces.  “Cosmos” speaks to both the physical and metaphorical universes in which we live, and “vanguards” are people who lead the way into uncharted territory.  This ida was inspired by a collaboration between Giorgiko and Young Steinway artist George Ko, who recently released an album of improvised contemporary interpretations of classical piano pieces by the same name.

In their new body of work, the artist duo Giorgiko explores the emotions connected with the human experience of stepping into the unknown. Giorgiko depicts some characters stepping into new places with hope or faith, while others proceed with trepidation or fear. Likewise, characters shield themselves with different levels of self-protection; some prepare themselves for the unknown by wearing literal space suits, while others seem to be protected by something more ethereal and mysterious. Whether playful or pensive, these 12 oil paintings form Giorgiko’s most cohesive body of work yet exploring the human response to the unknown.

WONDER & FRIENDS Solo Exhibition at Giant Robot

We're proud to announce the opening of our first drawing solo exhibition, Wonder & Friends at Giant Robot on Saturday, October 16, 2021.

Wonder & Friends welcomes all into a world that remembers what it was like to be a child. Through delicate line work, hints of 90s nostalgia, and a touch of humor, the artist duo of Darren and Trisha Inouye draw on their childhood memories to tell stories that are personal and relatable. From the tense conflict between friends to the simple joy of snacking on sweet red bean buns, the artists portray the cares and concerns of children as neither small, nor unimportant.  They share each character’s story with the hope of reminding viewers that we were all once children, too.

Works will be on display from Saturday 10/16 through Wednesday 11/3 with the opening reception beginning at 6pm on Saturday 10/16. Please save the date if you can make it! We'd love to see you there!

WHAT IS and what is not Solo Exhibition at Thinkspace

  • Thinkspace Projects (map)

What is and what is not was created during the 2020 apocalypse. “Apocalypse” comes from the Greek word “apokálypsis”, which means "an unveiling or unfolding of things not previously known and which could not be known apart from the unveiling". 2020 revealed much of what was hidden in us — both things that brought us hope and things that deeply grieved us. This new body of work explores the various questions raised and revelations experienced by so many during that tumultuous year and features 25 new oil paintings and new sculptural pieces.
